Ahead of the bookings the council is urging families to check their eligibility as national eligibility changes were made in September, and all families should check for Free School Meals (FSM). The changes mean that all households receiving Universal Credit can now apply, regardless of income. However, families must still apply, as eligibility is not awarded automatically.
The HAF programme offers funded holiday activities and nutritious meals for children and young people who receive Targeted (means-tested) Free School Meals.
The changes remove the previous earnings threshold for Universal Credit claimants, meaning more working families who receive Universal Credit top-up payments may now qualify for support.
Activities include sports, arts and crafts, music, dance, outdoor activities and more, delivered by local organisations, schools and community groups across Westmorland and Furness. Activities are inclusive to a range of additional needs.
Families should note that bookings are now managed through Eequ, and parents or carers will need to create a profile before booking. Through Eequ, families can browse activities, view session details and locations, and book places online.
Eligible children can attend up to four days of HAF provision during the Christmas holidays.
The programme continues to have a positive impact on children and families. One young person who attended Horizon Studios said:
"I didn't think I would get Star of the Day, but I'm really proud of myself. I enjoyed helping other young people and being a leader in the group. It made me feel like I could do more than I thought I could."
A parent whose child attended Smart Body Sports said:
"My autistic son sometimes struggles with new people and situations. He thoroughly enjoyed every moment, and we even signed him up for more sessions. The staff were friendly, welcoming and amazing from the very first moment."
Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said:
"The Christmas holidays should be a time for children and young people to have fun, make memories and spend time with friends. HAF offers exciting activities, nutritious meals and a chance for children to stay active, build confidence and feel connected to their local community.
I'd encourage all eligible families to check their eligibility now, see what's available and book a place from 19 November. As you can see by the comments, young people and parents alike find these sessions really valuable. We're grateful to the local organisations and providers who help make the programme such a positive experience for children and young people across Westmorland and Furness."
