A £401 million plan to maintain Cumbria’s roads and improve transport over the next four years has been approved by Cumbria Combined Authority this morning (Monday, 26th October)
The programme sets out how transport funding devolved from Government will be spent across the county, with decisions made locally about where investment is needed.
Developed with Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council, it includes road and bridge repairs, support for bus services and improvements to walking and cycling routes.
Cllr Mark Fryer, chair of Cumbria Combined Authority, said: “Devolution gives us more control over how transport funding is spent in Cumbria. We know the challenges people face here, and we should be making decisions locally about how to tackle them.
“This is a substantial investment in the roads and transport services people use every day. Working with both councils, we can plan ahead and put that money to work where it is needed.
“For people across Cumbria, the test will be better roads, more reliable journeys and easier access to work and services. That is what we need to deliver.”
The Cumbria Local Transport Delivery Plan covers investment from 2026/27 to 2029/30, following confirmation of the county’s funding settlement by the Department for Transport in December 2025.
It includes funding to maintain roads, bridges, footpaths, street lighting and drainage, alongside support for bus services and community transport.
There is also investment in bus stops and interchanges, walking and cycling routes, access to railway stations and electric vehicle infrastructure. Further funding will support the development of future transport schemes.
Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council will continue to develop and deliver schemes in their areas, with the combined authority setting priorities for Cumbria and monitoring progress.
Cumbria Combined Authority has also approved interim transport priorities to guide investment ahead of Cumbria’s first Local Transport Plan. That longer-term plan will be developed following the election of Cumbria’s first Mayor in May 2027.
