As thousands of travellers head to the area for this years Appleby Horse Fair, that gets underway on Thursday 4 June, a number of caravans and vehicles have set up camp in the carpark of JT Atkinsons and parts of the Penrith Go Outdoors carpark
Travellers had been urged not to arrive early for this year’s Appleby Horse Fair with the start of the event on Thursday, June 4, the warning had been issued as part of efforts to reduce disruption to nearby towns and villages.
Billy Welch, a Gypsy, Traveller, and Roma representative and member of the Multi Agency Co-ordinating Group (MASCG), said: "I am appealing to the Gypsy and Traveller community not to come too close, too soon to this year’s Fair.
"If we are spread out more, we have less of an impact on the surrounding towns and villages."
Claire Notman, chair of MASCG and Senior Manager Communities at Westmorland and Furness Council, said: "A priority for all the agencies involved in the response to the fair is that people and their animals travel as safely as possible to and from the fair and respect the communities that they pass through."
She also reminded travellers that Traffic Regulation Orders prohibiting roadside parking will be in place at various locations along travelling routes to the Fair and that arriving too soon causes unnecessary disruption for residents and problems on the road network.
Cumbria Police has confirmed they are working with Westmorland and Furness Council to address the camp that has been set up in the builders merchants carpark.
