Heavy Snow Closes M6 as Major Incident is Declared in Cumbria

A major incident has been declared with multi-agency response ongoing to minimise the challenges that heavy snowfall is continuing to have on the county’s road network.

The M6 Southbound between J38 and J37 is currently blocked due to jack-knifed lorries. 

Cumbria Police have said that the public should only travel where necessary.

Emergency shelters have been opened in parts of the Lake District and the South of the county to receive hundreds stranded by the snow.

The Met Officed has updated its weather warning with Penrith now covered by a yellow warning and part of Cumbria now covered by an amber weather warning.

The yellow warning for heavy snow and Ice covering most of Cumbria is now in place though until Sunday evening.

Cumbria Police have reiterated that the public that should only travel where necessary.
