An Extra Hour in Bed Tonight as Clocks Go Back in the Early Hours of Sunday Morning

It's that time of year again when we can all look forward to an extra hour in bed as the clocks go back in the early hours of Sunday morning (25th October).

With Storm Boelo bringing some wild weather over the weekend, many of us will hopefully be tucked up in bed when the clocks go back an hour at 2am, giving us an extra 60 minutes under the duvet on Sunday morning.

At 2am, the clocks will turn back to 1am as British Summer Time officially comes to an end and the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time for the winter months.

For most of us, modern technology has taken away some of the traditional ritual of changing the clocks. Smartphones, tablets and computers generally update themselves automatically, meaning there's no need to stay up until 2am to make the change.

But it wasn't that long ago when putting the clocks back was something of a household event, with clocks and watches around the house needing to be changed by hand before heading to bed to make the most of that precious extra hour.

Then came the familiar Sunday morning confusion, waking up and wondering whether you had remembered to change the bedroom clock, whether it was really the time it said it was, or whether you had somehow managed to get up an hour earlier than intended.

These days, while our phones generally take care of themselves, some alarm clocks, ovens, microwaves and central heating timers still need a helping hand.

So before heading to bed tonight, it's worth checking any clocks that don't change automatically and turning them back an hour to avoid any confusion in the morning.

Of course, there's a downside to that extra hour in bed. The evenings will start getting darker earlier, with sunset arriving an hour earlier by the clock from Sunday.

But for tonight at least, there's one bit of good news to enjoy. An extra hour in bed, and on a stormy autumn weekend, that's probably not a bad thing at all.

Just make sure the kids and the dog got the memo about the extra hour in bed.
