Greggs has today announced proposed changes to parts of its manufacturing operations following a comprehensive review of its manufacturing network.
The announcement comes as Greggs continues to deliver strong business performance and invest for future growth. More customers are choosing Greggs than ever before, and we have continued to invest significantly to support that growth. Since 2021, we have grown from 2,181 shops to 2,796 shops, bringing Greggs to new communities and creating thousands of jobs. Today, Greggs employ around 33,000 colleagues and remain committed to investing in its people, operations and the communities they serve.
Since the start of 2024, Greggs have invested more than £300 million in our manufacturing and logistics network, increasing capacity and delivering the infrastructure needed to support at least 3,500 shops across the UK.
Alongside this investment, they have undertaken a detailed review of the compaines manufacturing network to ensure operations remain efficient, resilient and fit for the future. The review concluded that owning and operating Greggs own manufacturing and logistics network remains a key strength and competitive advantage. The comapny claims its proposed changes are intended to build on that strength, helping ensure the business remains efficient and well positioned to support the next phase of growth while continuing to deliver the quality, value and service customers expect.
The proposals include relocating and consolidating some of manufacturing activity to fewer Greggs sites and sourcing a small number of products from specialist suppliers where this would deliver clear benefits while maintaining the quality customers know and trust.
Relocating some manufacturing and packing activities between sites.
The proposed closure of four manufacturing sites: Enfield, North Lakes (Penrith), Pettigrews and Seaham. Distribution operations at Enfield would remain unchanged.
The proposed closure of manufacturing operations at Treforest, which would continue to operate as a distribution centre.
Reducing the range of products manufactured at Clydesmill and Manchester, while retaining manufacturing operations at both sites.
Ending the manufacture of tinned bread at Gosforth.
If implemented following consultation, Greggs would have manufacturing operations focused across six sites: Clydesmill, Gosforth, Balliol, Leeds, Manchester and Derby. The companies retail shop estate is unaffected by these proposed changes.
Greggs will shortly be commencing a consultation process with affected colleagues and their union representatives. No final decisions have been made, and all feedback received during consultation will be carefully considered before any decisions are reached.
