Forty Seven Complaints against Councillors over the past year with One Town Councillor reported to Police

Since 1st April 2025, the Westmorland and Furness Council monitoring officer has received 47 complaints in total about councillors, 27 relating to Parish and Town Councillors and 20 complaints relating to Westmorland and Furness Councillors.

Of the 47 complaints Two were resolved by way of informal resolution and withdrawn. One complaint regarding a Penrith Town Council member was referred to Cumbria Police for investigation who chose not to progress the case and subsequently closed it with no further action.

Westmorland and Furness Council currently has 19 complaints progressing through the Council’s code of conduct process for dealing with complaints with seven of these complaints forwarded for formal investigation by the Monitoring Officer.

The remainder did not proceed as they were not classed as a Code of Conduct matter or did not meet the council’s threshold to proceed through the Council’s investigation process.

The councils Standards & Governance Sub-Committee that handles hearings regarding alleged breaches of the councillor code of conduct following investigation by the monitoring officer will meet next Friday 16th May to make judgement on a councillor following an investigation into complaints made against the councillor. The sub-committee for the hearing will have three councillors and an independent member of the public and council officers who will review the investigation reports, hearing evidence, and determining judgement on the councillor and any sanctions that may be taken.
