As communities, local councils, MP’s and National Highways await the outcome of the government’s spending review and the future funding decision for the A66 upgrade—expected on the 11th June—preparation works along the A66 continue to progress.
National Highways has now confirmed the permanent closure of a section of footpath and cycleway on the eastbound carriageway of the A66 at Penrith, just west of Kemplay Roundabout, from Sunday 2 June. This follows the recent permanent closure of the westbound layby between Kemplay and Junction 40. The closures are part of ongoing enabling works to facilitate utility diversions and the construction of a new access road.
A pedestrian diversion route will be in place, which is as follows:
West along the A66 towards M6 Junction 40
North on the A592 towards Penrith
East along Clifford Road
Along the footpath adjacent to the Ullswater Community College playing fields
Rejoining the footpath at Kemplay Roundabout
Clear signage will be installed to guide pedestrians safely through the diversion. Cyclists are advised that they will need to dismount along certain sections of the route.
Looking ahead, National Highways has announced plans for a new footpath and cycleway between Junction 40 and Kemplay Roundabout, which is scheduled to open upon completion of the A66 upgrade.
