At 15.35 today two appliances from Penrith Fire Station and an appliance from Shap were mobilised to a lorry fire on the M6 southbound between junction 40 and 39.
Traffic was stopped on the southbound carriageway while fire crew wearing breathing apparatus used compressed air foam and a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and control the spread of fire to the verges.
One lane of the M6 southbound was reopened once the fire was extinguished to allow traffic that had backed up to Junction 40 to resume their journey.
A spokes person for Penrith Fire Station said “We would like to thank the public for their patience while the incident was resolved, and extend our thanks to the HGV and car drivers that stopped and prevented traffic from entering the smoke plume leaving all responders plenty of room to arrive on scene and set up.”
Please can we remind drivers to be aware that emergency vehicles may use the hard shoulder as a means of getting to the incident.
