Drivers Reminded the M6 Southbound is Closed Tonight between J40 and J39

National Highways are reminding drivers that the M6 Southbound carriageway will be closed between junction 40 and junction 39 from 8pm tonight until 6am  Sunday.

The road will also close on Sunday night between 8pm and 6am Monday.

The closure is to allow National Highways to install long-term traffic management for a two-year project on the M6 at Clifton to replace the WestCoast main line bridge and £9 million overhaul of a bridge carrying the M6 over the River Lowther.

The northbound carriageway of the M6 was reduced to two lanes last weekend – with the hard shoulder and lane one closed and with drivers using lanes two and three to drive past the roadworks.

The M6 Southbound will from Monday 14th April also be reduced to two lanes –with the hard shoulder and lane one closed and drivers able to use lanes two and three past the roadworks.

A 40mph speed limit will be in force on the 4 mile section of the the M6 until the works are completed in approximately two years.

The weekend overnight carriageway closures will see a diversion between junction 40 and junction 39 using the A6. National highways have placed 30mph matrix signs in the villages of Shap, Hackthorpe Clifton and Eamont Bridge to remind motorway traffic of the reduced speeds through the rural villages along the A6 to 30mph.
