A report due to be considered by Westmorland and Furness Councils staffing committee next week will set out the councils 2026 pay policy levels for the councils 31 senior staff totalling £3,537,172.
With 28 of the councils senior officers receiving over £100,000 annual salary with six officers earning almost as much as the UK Prime Minister and the councils Chief Executive earning more than the Prime Minister.
local authorities are required by the Localism Act to prepare an Annual Pay Policy Statement. These statements must include the authority’s policy to the pay of its workforce, particularly its senior staff (or ‘chief officers’) and its lowest paid employees.

The Council low paid workers defined as those on the lowest pay grade used by the Council for
substantive roles have current minimum pay for employees within council of £24,413 per annum which is a ratio of 1:7.7 in comparison with the Chief Executive salary with the increase in the Chief Executive Salary the minimum pay for the councils low paid workers will increase to £25,949 per annum, which is a ratio of 1:7.3 in comparison with the Chief Executive salary.
