Urgent Bridge Repairs to Close M6 Southbound Between Junctions 39 and 36 On Monday Night

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead as the M6 southbound through the Lune Gorge will be closed on Monday night (29 June) between Junctions 39 and 36, so that urgent repairs can be made to a damaged bridge.

A recent inspection of the seven bridges that make up the Lune Gorge scheme identified deteriorated expansion joints and worn carriageway surfacing that requires immediate intervention to maintain safety, provide reliable journeys and avoid emergency closures.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The deterioration is the most severe on Jeffery's Bridge and needs addressing as a matter of urgency. We will be carrying out urgent repair work overnight to minimise disruption.

"The rapid deterioration of the bridges that carry the M6 through the Lune Gorge emphasises that improvements are essential to keep drivers safe and ensure the road remains fit for the future."

There will be a full overnight closure between Junctions 39 and 36 Southbound while work is carried out on Jeffrey's Bridge. The closure will be in place from 8pm on Monday night until 6am on the Tuesday morning. A diversion route via Kendal will be in place during this time.

The bridges over Lune Gorge were built in the late 1960s and are near the end of their lifespan. The project is essential to keep drivers safe and ensure the structures remain fit for the future.

The proposed M6 Lune Gorge project is intended to address the underlying issues through more comprehensive improvements, including the replacement of the bridge decks. Following engagement with the local community, and learning lessons on the scheme, National Highways recently announced that it will undertake a full review of how this important project will be delivered. A public consultation exercise will follow lasting for at least 6 weeks.

National Highways will consider a range of options that allow us to complete work to the appropriate technical standards, while ensuring the safety of road users, our workers, and the local community, as well as providing value to the taxpayer.

The main work is due to start in Spring 2027
