Motorists travelling on the A6 south of Penrith are being advised of a series of overnight closures beginning this week, as essential highway maintenance works are carried out by Westmorland and Furness Council and National Highways.
The first closure comes into effect from 8pm on Tuesday 11th June, affecting southbound traffic on the A6 at Eamont Bridge. The restriction, in place for approximately 12 nights, will run between 8pm and 5am each night until morning of the 23rd June. During these hours, southbound vehicles will not be permitted to travel through the affected section, which runs from the junction with the B5320 to the A66 Kemplay Bank Roundabout. A traffic order has been issued to allow this work, which includes road stud removal and surface maintenance.
The 12 night closure is to enable National Highways to create a new access junction from the A6 at Kemplay Bank onto land next to Penrith Fire Station as part of early preparation work for the A66 upgrade to perform utility diversions.
A signed diversion will direct southbound traffic via the A66 westbound, M6 southbound, B6261, and back onto the unrestricted section of the A6.
An alternative route for non-motorway southbound traffic will also be available via the A66 westbound, A592 (Pooley Bridge), and the B5320 (Yanwath).
Further overnight closures have also been scheduled for the following dates:
12th June (6pm) to 13th June (6am): The A6 between Clifton and Hackthorpe will be closed overnight.
24th June (6pm) to 25th June (6am): The A6 from the 30mph signs north of Clifton to the Eamont Bridge mini roundabout will be closed.
These works are necessary for the safe removal of road studs and general highway maintenance.
Pedestrian access and passage for dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times throughout the closures.
Residents and road users are advised to plan journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel during the overnight works.
