Twice the population of Penrith set descend Kendal Calling 2023

Thursday is set to see Kendal Calling 2023 kick off its four day event with headliners such as Kasabian, Blossoms and Nile Rodgers & Chic.

Set in Lowther Deer Park, the festival will return for its 17th year from July 27 to 30. As well as the headliners, other acts include Kaiser Chiefs, Royal Blood, Example, KT Tunstall, Natalie Imbruglia, Beabadoobee, Rick Astley, Scouting for Girls, Frank Turner, and more.

The festival will see crowds flock to the festival and camp over the weekend just south of Penrith creating a pop up town as Kendal Calling is set to see a daily population of over twice the population of Penrith with over 40,000 people expected to be in the field each day and many camping overnight at the festival.

Traffic is expected to see a sharp increase from Thursday morning as the first days events get underway and people start to arrive.

With roadworks on the M6 and lane reductions and speed limits queuing traffic is forecast along with delays along the A66 to Kemplay Roundabout along the A6.


Traffic lights will also be operating on the A6 at Clifton cross during peak times as traffic is directed on and off the A66 at the Brougham junction to and from the festival.

The festival site opens for camping at 9am on Thursday 27th July  for those with Thursday entry tickets alongside their full weekend tickets. Traffic is expected to see a substantial increase from early Thursday morning throughout the day.

Kendal Calling have extensive rules about what can and can't be brought on to the site. There's a strict list online of what is prohibited in the field as well as the campsite and arena. 

Cumbria Police have established a remote command centre and a large police presence has been established at the festival alongside the other emergency services as the normally quiet rural Lowther Deer Park get ready to see a population more than twice the population of Penrith descend on the area as Kendal Calling 2023 gets underway.
