Candidates Described by some Voters at Penrith Hustings as Underwhelming

This evening's election hustings at QEGS that has already seen controversy and claims one candidate was not invited started just after 6pm with five of the eight candidates on stage to answer questions from the audience of approximately 80 people who attended including some party members of the candidates.

The questioning kicked off with a question on odour pollution from former town councillor Jeff Thomson of Fresh AIR for Penrith. 

Who asked what the candidates position was on the “Penrith Pong” in response Labour, Lib Dem and Reform candidates expressed their concerns about the town's odour pollution problem and committed if elected as MP for Penrith and Solway next Thursday to bring an end to the 'pong' !

Candidates answered further questions and made a statement as to why they should be elected as MP for Penrith and Solway on July 4th.

After the Hustings we asked some of those attending if they had changed their mind on who they will vote for next Thursday and their thoughts on the candidates some said they were still no clearer on the policy and positions of the candidates some said they were underwhelmed by the candidates and their responses to questions.

Alongside the five candidate’s town Mayor Cllr Lawson was a standing in for the Green Party candidates with Conservative Candidate Mark Jenkinson and SDP Candidate Shaun Long not present at the Hustings With Mark Jenkinson claiming he had not been invited to attend the hustings.

The Eight Candidates standing in Penrith and Solway are:

Julia Aglionby, Liberal Democrats

Susan Denham - Smith, The Green Party

Roy Ivinson, Independent

Mark Jenkinson, Conservative Party

Chris Johnston, Independent

Shaun Long, Social Democratic Party
