As thousands of people depart Kendal Calling on Monday many will be planning to head to Penrith train station to get home as train operators’ issue Do Not Travel warnings to passengers due to the forecast severe weather caused by Storm Floris,
The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for strong winds and heavy rain, which will affect train services between England and Scotland on Monday (4th August).
Avanti West Coast are telling customers not to travel north of Preston on Monday as the west coast mainline route is expected to be heavily affected by Storm Floris.
The advice from avanti west coast is for passengers planning to travel to or from destinations north of Preston include Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Haymarket, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.
Tickets to travel with Avanti West Coast to stations North of Preston dated for Monday 4th August will be accepted for travel today, Sunday 3th August or Tuesday 5th August, at any time via the same route
TransPennine Express haver also said services WILL NOT operate on the following routes on Monday 4th August 2025:
Carlisle to Glasgow Central, in both directions
Carlisle to Edinburgh, in both directions
Newcastle to Edinburgh, in both directions
TransPennine Express services between the following routes are subject to delays and cancellations on Monday 4th August 2025 :
Liverpool Lime Street to Carlisle, in both directions
Manchester Airport to Carlisle, in both directions
A spokesperson for the train operator said “TransPennine Express will not be operating between Carlisle and Glasgow / Edinburgh in both directions or between Edinburgh and Newcastle, in both directions on Monday 4th August.”
“As a result we are advising passengers do not travel . There are no trains or rail replacement buses running between Carlisle/Newcastle and Glasgow Central/Edinburgh in both directions. “
If your train is delayed or cancelled due to Storm Floris and you abandoned your journey as a result, you can claim a fee free refund from where you bought your ticket. If you continued with your journey but were delayed by 15 minutes or more, you can claim Delay Repay compensation from the train company you travelled with.
