Traffic light chaos on Kemplay roundabout set to end as work gets underway to install new control unit

The current traffic light chaos on Kemplay Roundabout is set to end in the next few days as work to repair the lights is underway today.

Contractors for National Highways commenced over the last 24 hours what is anticipated by National Highways to be three days works to install a new control unit on Kemplay Roundabout and recommission the full traffic light system and pedestrian crossing points on the roundabout.

Traffic lights around half of Kemplay roundabout have remain inoperable for almost eight weeks, after the lights control system was irreparably damaged on the 25th May during a road traffic collision.

The damage following the collision resulted in the traffic signals on the southern section of the roundabout became inoperable and also disabled the fire service’s emergency access onto the roundabout.

The road traffic collision also affected pedestrian crossing points resulting in closure of some footways around Kemplay Roundabout.

The partial lights have resulted in some confusion among motorists in recent weeks along with some delays as the remaining operational lights cause tailbacks as traffic flows onto the roundabout out of sequence with the operational lights.

Some local residents have said “the Kemplay roundabout lights should be turned off and let the roundabout work as a roundabout.”

Others have said they are “glad the lights will be back as” they  “have had a few near misses in the last few weeks”

Kemplay Roundabout is set to see major works commence in early 2024 as part of the A66 upgrade with the roundabout set to be replaced with an underpass carrying the A66 and two bridges running North-South to carry the A6 between Eamont Bridge and Penrith.
