Town Council to Discuss Thacka Beck Land Disposal in Private Meeting

Penrith Town Council is set to hold a private debate at its meeting on Monday evening, where the town councillors will deliberate the fate of council land at Thacka Beck. The council will discuss the disposal of the land at Thack Beck in a private meeting with both the press and the public excluded from the meeting for the discussion and vote on the future of the land.

The Thacka Beck land was transferred into Penrith Town Council's ownership on the 5th of November 2020, by the former Cumbria County Council after Cllr Patricia Bell had approached the town council in 2017 and asked them to consider applying for an asset transfer of the land from the county council as the land was used by residents for recreational activities such as dog walking and as an area to play, after associated land was sold by the county council for a housing development.

The town council has over the past year carried out work on the land including creating footpaths, planting trees, new signage and access gates onto the land at Thacka Beck.

National Highways has said it has been in discussions with the town council regarding the land since August 2020 with National Highways formally invited Penrith Town Council to negotiate on disposal of land at Thacka Beck to National Highways on the 28th March 2022.

Penrith Town Council accepted the invitation to start negotiations with National Highways, who has expressed hope that they can secure the land interests required for the A66 upgrade project through a mutual agreement with the town council.
