Town Council Reverses Decision to Object to Veterinary Clinic Signage Plans

Penrith Town Council has reversed its decision to object to signage plans for a new veterinary clinic on Carleton Hill Road, clearing the way for the scheme to progress.

Earlier this month, the town council had submitted an objection to Westmorland and Furness Council over proposals by Frame & Swift for 3D aluminium fascia lettering with a backlit bar at the purpose-built clinic. The plans set out that the company name that will appear in embossed lettering on the gable end of the new building, with an illuminated highlight bar.

The application is now due to go before the Westmorland and Furness Council Planning Committee at Voreda House next Wednesday, as objections had initially been lodged by the town council. Despite the town council objections Planning officers have recommended approval of the scheme, noting in their report that the town council had been invited to reconsider its position at its planning committee meeting on 1st September.

The council’s original objection described the illuminated signage as “intrusive within a rural area”. However, at Monday night’s planning committee meeting, members reversed their stance after the deputy town clerk clarified that the backlighting impact would be limited.

All but one town councillor on the planning committee voted to support the plans, with a single member maintaining their objection to the signage plans.

If approved by Westmorland and Furness Council planning committee next Wednesday as recommended, the signage will form part of the new veterinary clinic development currently under way on Carleton Hill Road.
