Town Council Raise Concerns of plans to Close Burrowgate on Saturday Nights

Town council members have express concerns over plans by Westmorland and Furness Council to close Burrowgate on Saturday nights from 10pm through to 3am Sunday over the reasons for it and its effectiveness due to the small section of road it would be implemented on.

Councillors at the town council meeting held on Monday evening were asked to give their thoughts and views on an informal consultation into the experimental prohibition of traffic on Burrowgate to help address issues with speeding vehicles using the road as part of an unofficial racing circuit and the risk it creates for pedestrians as the exit pubs and “night club” along Burrowgate.

Some of the councillors expressed concerns the closure would simply push the issue of racing vehicles onto other roads and have no impact.

Cllr Knaggs suggested that maybe a barrier like is used on Botchergate in Carlisle would be more appropriate and used to close of the centre of Penrith to traffic rather than just Burrowgate to benefit the towns nighttime economy.

Cllr Holder questioned what sort of message barriers across the streets of Penrith would send to locals and visitors.

The town council agreed to respond to the informational consultation raising the councils concerns and suggestions noting that the consultation was just at this time an informal consultation by Westmorland and Furness Council.
