Town Council Agrees to Adopt and Fund Restoration of Commemorative Bench outside former British Legion

Penrith Town Council has agreed to adopt and restore a commemorative bench located outside the former Royal British Legion building in the town. The bench was placed in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day.

The town council decision to adopt and repair the bench followed a  request from the former President of the Women’s Section of the Penrith Branch of the Royal British Legion asking the town council to take on ownership and responsibility for the bench as the future of the bench had become uncertain following the closure of the Women’s Section of the Penrith Branch of the Royal British Legion due to falling membership and the British Legion building having closed and been sold.

Members of the Town Council’s Finance Committee considered the request and noted that the Women’s Section of the RBL could not offer and financial support to the upkeep of the bench as the group had returned all its remaining funds to the RBL headquarters and was therefore unable to contribute financially toward the bench’s restoration.

Restoration costs the town council expected will be in the region of £750, which the Council confirmed it will cover from its existing seats and shelters budget.

The town councils finance committee resolved: “That the Council adopts and restores the commemorative bench which is located at the old Royal British Legion building and that the restoration costs be met from the seats and shelters budget.”

Under the adoption, the Town Council will take responsibility for the bench’s future maintenance and any associated repair costs, ensuring the seat continues to serve the community for years to come.
