The volunteers who are bringing pride into the heart of our community

With spectacular natural landscapes, picturesque villages and market towns, Eden has an enviable identity as an attractive place to live, work and visit. Many are rightly proud to call the area home, and some give up their time to make sure their corner of Eden is always looking at its best.

Penrith and Eden are fortunate to have a thriving committed group of volunteers making a real difference by helping to keep Penrith and Eden tidy.

Those of us old enough to remember the Wombles will recall furry creatures in Wimbledon Common teaching the nation how to collect and recycle rubbish.

Fast forward to the present day, and Penrith and Eden is fortunate to have our very own active group of Wombles who as a team of volunteers tackle the growing issue of litter around Penrith and Eden.

As well as the usual rubbish discarded along paths, roadsides and hedgerows, they also come across tyres and a supermarket trolley dumped by fly-tippers.

The volunteer army of Eden Wombles that formed during the pandemic is something that enhances life both for the volunteer who rightfully have the satisfaction and civic pride of contributing to their community and for those who benefit from the efforts of Eden’s very own Wombles helping make our communities better places through their efforts to tackle litter discarded by others.

In the past few weeks the group has collected approximately 100 bags of litter scattered around the local area ranging from not just Penrith, but also Appleby, Shap, Junction 41, Stoneybeck, A6, A6 Clifton, Clickham to Penrith and some routes from Penrith to Lazonby, also Plumpton to Lazonby.

As well as individuals going about the are collecting litter the Eden Wombles regularly organise group litter picks.

Niki Brabant one of the founding members of the group said “We have had approximately 70 new members in the first three months of this year and it is great to have so many new 'like minded' folk involved.”

Tony Pears another of the Eden Wombles that could well be Penrith and Eden’s very own Great Uncle Bulgaria wanted to give a special mention to some of the other Eden Wombles for their collective efforts over that last two weeks in collecting 86 bags of litter between them.

Among the Wombles Tony wanted to give a special mention are Nikki Brabant , Louise Milner, Carol Parker, Andy Sharples (Gill), Doreen Dickinson, Sylvia Dirom, Sarah Dobinson, Emma Louise Barker, Pippa Barlow, Robin Murray, Eya Lamb and Debbie Upperton. Who have been out picking up the ‘things that everyday folks leave behind’ across Penrith and Eden and are among the bags of litter in the photo and who can often be spotted out with blue bin bag and litter picker in hand along paths and roads across Penrith and the Eden area.
