Talkin' Tables Initiative Spreads Hope and Friendship in Penrith

Loneliness, often referred to as the hidden pandemic in society, has been a prevalent issue exacerbated by the challenges of modern living.

In response, Marjorie Hayward, a resident of Chorley, founded the befriending charity "Friends For You," now known as "New Friends For You," in 2016.

The charity aimed to alleviate the isolation felt by lonely and housebound individuals in Chorley and its surrounding areas.

Today, it continues to flourish, with approximately 130 individuals benefiting from the support of 70-80 dedicated volunteers who visit them on a weekly basis.

In 2017, Marjorie Hayward recognized another pressing need and initiated the After Loss Club, providing a safe space for individuals who have experienced bereavement or divorce.

With the aim of encouraging people to step out of their homes and overcome the fear that gripped many during the Covid-19 lockdowns,

Marjorie Hayward launched the "Talking Tables" initiative in July 2021. The concept, born out of the recognition that loneliness can be detrimental to one's well-being, self-esteem, and mental health, gained momentum as more individuals became aware of the challenges posed by isolation. The initiative offers a simple yet powerful solution—creating spaces where people can come together, talk, and form new connections.

Since its inception, "Talking Tables" has grown exponentially, with over 50 venues spanning from Carlisle to Stourbridge and Dudley in the West Midlands, and across Lancashire towards Manchester.

One of these venues, the Booths Store Café, located in Penrith, has embraced the initiative wholeheartedly.

Edwin Booth, the Executive Chairman of Booths, expressed his support for the project, with the goal of establishing a Talkin' Table in each of their cafes.

On July 3rd, 2023, a new Talkin' Table was launched at Booths on Brunswick Road in Penrith, marking an exciting step forward.

The inaugural event at Booths had a good turnout, with representatives from the Salvation Army, Hunter Lane, Penrith, in attendance.

Inspired by the positive impact of the Talkin' Table, the Salvation Army expressed their desire to establish a similar gathering within their own organization. The 4Eden Café has also eagerly joined the movement and will launch their Talkin' Table on September 14th, from 10:30am to 11:30am.

The enthusiasm surrounding the initiative has even led to discussions with another venue in Penrith, highlighting the growing interest and support for Talkin' Tables in the community.

The Talkin' Tables initiative has proven to be a beacon of hope, empowering individuals and improving the mental health of those involved. By fostering connections, breaking down barriers, and nurturing a sense of community, this initiative is conquering loneliness one table at a time.

If you find yourself in or around Penrith and yearn for meaningful conversations and new friendships, you can pop in and join Talkin' Tables at Booths Cafe every Monday from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Just ask for Anna, who will be more than happy to chat and introduce you to new friends.
