Several Penrith Pubs close doors for Saturday Night as Appleby Fair gets underway.

Several Penrith Pubs have this evening closed there doors at 7pm.

With The Board and Elbow, The Pinny, Station Hotel, The Grey Goat, George Hotel, 1597, The Woolpack, Robbin Hood collectively closing early having experienced issues in other years.


The Boar and Elbow Said “For the safety of our staff & customers, we will be supporting our fellow pubs and closing this evening at 7pm.”


The pubs and takeaway businesses in Penrith that have remained open are experiencing a slow nights trade.


Penrith streets are empty with the exception of one or two in search of an open pub this evening.

One Penrith Takeaway owner told us “Saturday night is normally our busiest night of the week. I have 8 staff working tonight and if it stays this quiet it will have cost me more tonight that we will make. I have not seen Penrith streets this empty on a Saturday night since the hight of lockdowns.”


Some businesses were open to bookings only this evening.

All those who have closed are expected to open as normal on Sunday.

The Pinny said they are “sorry for any inconvenience” and will “re open at 10am Sunday morning”.


Penrith has in previous years seen large numbers travel along the A66 from Appleby Horse Fair on the Saturday night of the weekend even. 


Most Pubs across Appleby and Kirkby Stephen have also closed this weekend.


However for the first time a large beer tent which will be in operation at this year’s Appleby Horse Fair with capacity for 2,500 people operated by Wannasee Ltd, who organise the annual popular tribute act festival held at Hutton-in-the-Forest in August.
