Scaws Tenants and Residents Association which was first formed on 18 October 1994 and have voted to disband after 30 years supporting the local community after a new rival group was formed with the suppoort of local councillors and staff.
The Tenants and Residents Association which has been a driving force in the local community over the last 30 years have made a big difference for residents in the Scaws area from providing equipment to Beaconside School, improving the aesthetics of the area by installing benches, bins and planting bulbs, and in 2016 raised around £55,000 for a multi-use games area.
One of the many successes of the Scaws Tenants and Residents Association alongside the MUGA (multi-use games area) was the protection of a large open space used by the community that was protected with village green status in 2019.
Every year a Year 6 pupil at Beaconside Primary School is awarded the Community Award ‘Learning to Live, Learning to Shine’ and have their name added to the shield provided by the Scaws Tenants’ and Residents’ Association.
The Group has held meetings on the second Tuesday of each month for 30 years with a dedicated group of local residents along with attendees from the town council and Westmorland and Furness Council. The former Eden District Council and Cumbria County Council also supported the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, and councillors attended meetings.
After 30 years the Association have at their meeting held on Tuesday evening at Beaconside School, voted to bring their 30 years of serving the local community to an end and formally disband the Scaws Tenants’ and Residents’ Association with a final meeting planned in January.
The move to disband the Scaws Tenants and Residents Association comes just weeks after Westmorland and Furness Councillor for the Penrith North ward covering Scaws, Cllr Bell announced at a recent town council meeting that a new Scaws Recreation group has been established that Cllr Bell is part of.
Penrith Town Council and Westmorland and Furness Council have been asked for comment on the disbanding after 30 years of the Scaws Tenants and Residents Association.
