Robbie Dee Signs Off As Greatest Hits Radio local show for Cumbria Ends

Greatest Hits Radio’s local show for Cumbria will end as the studio used by the station is set to close.

The premises will be vacated by Bauer Media staff later today, (Friday 27th September), in order for property reinstatement work to take place. The closure means the Robbie Dee’s afternoon show on Greatest Hits Radio will come to an end on Friday afternoon with listeners in Cumbria and South West Scotland will be receiving a network afternoon show from 1pm on Monday 30th September.

Greatest Hits Radio is currently required as part of its Ofcom license to offer a three-hour locally presented show in its north-west England region, which will be covered by the breakfast show, currently presented from Liverpool by Simon Ross.

A Bauer Media Audio spokesperson said: ‘Atlantic House has been the home of Greatest Hits Radio Cumbria & South West Scotland, and CFM before it for a number of years and we’re really grateful for all the many good times and memories.

“As we close the building doors and open a new chapter, we remain committed to providing our audiences with local news and information for the area alongside our national programming.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all our teams, but particularly Robbie Dee whose passion and commitment to radio is really inspiring. We wish him all the best.”

The late John Myers launched CFM in Carlisle, from premises adjacent to the former Border studios in Durranhill, in April 1993.

In April 2010, the station moved to a new base at Atlantic House in Kingstown. Before CFM as the local station was merged into Greatest Hits Radio network in April 2023 with only the Robbie Dee show produced from the Carlisle base all remaining staff linked to the station will now be home based and no Cumbria produced programming forming part of Greatest Hits Radio output from Friday evening as Robbie Dee’s signs off from his last afternoon on the station having been with the station, previously presenting the CFM breakfast, for over 20 years.

As one chapter of local radio history closes in Cumbria one local company is planning for a resurgence of local radio in 2025 for Penrith and Carlisle when Ofcom is expected to announce the award of a local digital radio licence to local company Cumbria.Digital who plan to enable upto 20 DaB radio stations to broadcast on their local DaB multiplex across the are if successful in the licensing round as the only application for the area. Their plans including working with the existing community radio stations and new community and commercial local stations alongside niche broadcasters.
