Northern Gas Networks is continuing to carry out essential work in Penrith to replace the gas mains through the town centre to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.
Northern Gas Networks have said that some of the older, metal pipes have been in the ground for decades and have reached the end of their useful life including pipes located on Middlegate and King Street which NGN prioritised for replacement following repair work to a section of pipe on King Street.
The work on Kingstreet is the final phase of the current gas works that started on the 3rd of January at the bottom of Brunswick road and Middlegate.
Work on the final phase on Kingstreet started on the 19th of February having been delayed following delays with completion of phase 1 and 2.
Work was originally due to be completed on all three phases by 8th of March.
The work permits for stage three along Kingstreet have last week been further extended by Westmorland and Furness Council highways through until the 22nd of March.
Penrith.Town asked Norther Gas Networks to comment on the further extension to the road closure permits for the final phase of the works, Dan Hind, Operations Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “Work to upgrade ageing metal gas mains in Penrith began in January. The project was planned to take place in three phases to minimise the disruption caused.”
“Phase 1 and 2 are now compete and our engineers are working to complete the final phase of the work. Unfortunately the cold weather that we’ve experienced over the past couple of months has meant that we have had to allow more drying time for road surfaces during the earlier stages of the project, which has had a knock on impact on the overall duration of the work.”
“We have been working closely with customers and stakeholders in the local area to keep them informed about the work and we’d like to reassure people that we’re doing everything we can to complete the work as quickly as possible.”
