Poppy Appeal Launched in Penrith with Recognition of 65 Years Dedicated Service by Edith Bamber

The Royal British Legion launched their 2023 Poppy Appeal in Penrith on Saturday along with the introduction of a new plastic-free poppy.

Made entirely from paper, the plastic-free poppy is available alongside stock of the existing poppy to reduce waste, and can be recycled in ordinary paper recycling collections.

Since its emergence as a symbol of Remembrance after the First World War, poppies have taken on various shapes and sizes.

From handmade silk and cotton poppies to wartime poppies, 2023 sees the biggest change in the poppy’s design for a generation with the new plastic free poppy.

Wearing your poppy shows you care, and helps the Royal British Legion raise vital funds to support the Armed Forces community all year round.

During the launch event in Penrith on Saturday, Mrs Edith Bamber, of the Penrith Royal British Legion was recognised and thanked for 65 years of selfless service helping people across the military community and their dependents.

She was presented with a Certificates and pins for 65 years of service selling poppies, by Alan Whitmore from the Royal British Legion and SSgt Dean Ferguson from Penrith Army Cadet Force.

Members of the Penrith Branch of the women’s legion said “we are so immensely proud of our President Edith Bamber and all that she does for our community.”

Royal British Legion said “This is truly wonderful to see! A huge well done and thank you to Edith for all the incredible support over so many years.”

The Dedication of the Garden of Remembrance takes place on Saturday 11th November at 11am in St Andrew’s Churchyard ahead of the Remembrance Day Parade and Service that takes place on Sunday 12th November.

The civic parade for invited dignitaries and town organisations forms up at 2.00pm at Penrith Town Hall for the customary March down Middlegate and Devonshire Street for the Town’s Service of Remembrance.
