Advertising signage plans for Penrith’s new Tesco Express in Carleton are set for approval next week when the Westmorland and Furness Council Eden area planning committee meet.
Plans for the new store by North Lakes Estates Limited were approved by the council in January 2024 on land near Carleton Hall Farm, shortly after it emerged the new store would become a Tesco Express.
The new Tesco Express store is expected to create around 20 full-time and part-time roles when it opens later this year.
The current application submitted to the council in May 2024 for the approval of advertisement signage that includes some illuminated signage had seen concerns raised by Penrith Town Council. The town councils planning committee has said “Should Westmorland & Furness Council be minded to approve the application, Penrith Town Council would wish it to be conditioned that all illuminated signage should be turned off outside business hours in what is a semi rural residential area.”
Council officers have said: "The proposed advertisements as amended would not be unduly detrimental to public amenity, cause undue light pollution, or give rise to any substantive issues of highway safety.
Councillors meeting on Wednesday will be recommended to approve the planning application be planning officers with some conditions including the signs been static in nature and only illuminated during hours the new store is open.
