Penrith MP under Parliamentary Investigation over financial register of interests

Penrith and Solway MP under investigation by Parliamentary commissioner over claims of Failure to register earnings with his parliamentary register of interests.

Markus Campbell-Savours MP who was elected just 161 days ago in the July general election is under investigation by the parliamentary commissioner looking into a potential breach of the parliamentary code of conduct.

The investigation by the commissioner is looking into claims that Campbell-Savours failed to declare earnings. The parliamentary code of conduct requires that MP’s must register, payments received (of whatever size) for any employment outside the House once they have received a total of over £300 in payments from the same source in a calendar year.

The House requires new Members, within one month of their election, to register all their current financial interests, and any registrable benefits received in the 12 months before their election. After that, Members are required to register within 28 days any change in those registrable interests.

The register provides information about any financial interest or other material benefit which a Member receives which might reasonably be thought by others to influence his or her actions, speeches or votes in Parliament, or actions taken in his or her capacity as a Member of Parliament.

The Commissioner looks at evidence that individual MPs may have broken the Rules of Conduct. Once an inquiry has finished the Commissioner decides whether or not an MP has broken the rules if the commissioner finds the Penrith and Solway MP has broken the rules then the commissioner would report the case to the parliamentary standards committee who would consider the breach and make recommends to the the commons what action should be taken.
