During the debate on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the House of Lords on Thursday. Lord Campbell-Savours former West Cumbria MP and father of Penrith and Solway MP Markus Campbell-Savours made a statement via video link from his home about Israel and Gaza and asked why the UK with or without others could create a safe haven enclave.
Lord Dale Campbell-Savours said: “Can I as a lifelong supporter of the state of Israel ask why can’t we, with others, with or without the United Nations, create a safe haven enclave within a part of Gaza, as I successfully argued for in April 1991 in the Commons in the case of Iraq, supplying hospitals, food, security and aid, whilst requiring a total Israeli military withdrawal from the enclave.”
“The trickle feed of aid is unacceptable. Israel will only back off when it is confronted by real intervention backed up by the threat of occupying forces within the Gaza enclave from the international community. All we need is the guts to challenge the bullying behaviour of a minority in Likud. Confronted by worldwide anger and intervention, they will back off.”
Markus Campbell-Savours, MP for Penrith and Solway: “I fully support my father’s intervention on this important issue. These are exactly the kind of points he would have pushed were he still in Parliament and I am grateful for his knowledge and experience.”
To show his support Markus Campbell-Savours, MP’s parliamentary office team shared the by Lord Campbell-Savours in calling for the creation of a safe haven enclave within part of Gaza.
In response to the statement by Lord Collins of Highbury Said “l understand my noble friend’s frustrations, but our efforts have been absolutely focused on building a strong international alliance and working with allies within the region to ensure that there is a longer-term political process that leads to a two-state solution. The immediate situation requires Israel to stop blocking aid into Gaza and to ensure that we can reach a situation where the political dialogue my noble friend referred to can take place. We are absolutely committed to that. Fundamentally, we urgently need a ceasefire now, we need application of that agreement and the release of hostages, but we also need that aid into Gaza.”
