Penrith Mountain Rescue Team team has been left “angry and dismayed" after find donations had been stolen from its collection box.
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team said they made the discovery of the charity donation box at Mardale Head been vandalised and donations stolen, on Sunday, after spending 12 hours on call-outs on Saturday.
A spokesperson for Penrith Mountain Rescue Team said “After spending 1am - 7pm Saturday on a few tiring and emotionally charged call-outs, the team were very saddened, angry and dismayed to arrive for Sunday training to find our Mardale Head collection box (set in a stone wall) had been vandalised and had donations stolen.”
The Penrith Mountain Rescue Team is entirely voluntary and rely on donations and the generosity of the public to stay operational and to be able to help people in need when they call upon.
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team have a kickstarter fundraiser underway for its planned new base in Penrith, the spokesperson said “the team are working hard to fundraise for this, so having donations stolen does impact the future for us.”
Cumbria Police said it had been made aware that a Mountain Rescue Team charity cash box has been broken into and money stolen at Mardale Head, Haweswater some time between the 1st and 6th of July 2025.
