Penrith Community Radio Station Eden Fm On Air for Another Five Years

Eden FM the local community radio station that broadcasts to Penrith and local communities around the town on 107.5 FM received some good news from Ofcom the tv and radio regulator in March with the renewal of its community radio station licence for another five years.

Eden FM submitted an application for renewal of its licence earlier this year, that community radio stations are required do every five years in order to remain on air.

The stations third extension by Ofcom of the community radio licence, for its 107.5 FM frequency up until June 2029, was granted in March 2024 by Ofcom.

The campaign for a local station was launched in June 2010 by Lee Quinn, and the station carried out three 28-day restricted service licence broadcasts in November to December 2011, followed by a couple more in June to July 2012 and November to December 2012. Eden FM submitted its application for a full-time community radio licence in January 2013 and was awarded a 5-year licence in October of that year with the station launching full time in June 2014.

The community radio station now broadcasts from Newton Rigg along with its main studio also based at Newton Rigg. The station’s volunteers broadcasting live from the Newton Rigg studio and from remote home studios across the local area.

Community radio stations like Eden FM face a number of limitations imposed by Ofcom licencing regulations compared to commercial radio stations including limits on transmitter power and range the station can broadcast to, plus they are restricted to making a maximum of £15,000 from advertising and sponsorship a year, but with the stations dedicated team of volunteers, Eden Fm continues to bring its mixed range of shows and music to the local community via 107.5fm and a growing global audience via its online streaming service.

Congratulation from the Penrith.Town team to all the volunteers at Eden FM on the renewal of the licence.
