Penrith Bank Closures Begins with Lloyds and Halifax set to Close on Tuesday

The start of a wave of Bank closures in Penrith will start on Tuesday (19th March) with Lloyds Bank on Kingstreet and Halifax Building Society on Middlegate both closing their doors in the town for the last time.

Both Lloyds Bank and Halifax have said that more of their customers are doing their everyday banking online. With more customers banking digitally, both Lloyds and Halifax have seen a fall in branch visits. Because of this, both decided to close their Penrith branches.

The Penrith Branch of Lloyds had only 288 customers using the branch regularly each month with Penrith’s Halifax branch used regularly on a monthly basis by only 70 customers.

Community Bankers will support customers after the closure of the Penrith Lloyds bank by offering banking services and account support although no cash transactions will be available via this facility. Community Banker will have a dedicated space in a community venue. 

In Penrith this will initially be once a week on Thursdays between 9am and 3pm at the Eden Rural Foyer located on Old London Road in Penrith.

On the following dates 28 March, 4 April, 11 April, 18 April, 25 April, 2 May, 9 May and 16 May.

Halifax will also be providing a community service at the Eden Rural Foyer on Wednesdays between 9am and 3pm.

The dates for the Halifax community banker service are 27 March, 3 April, 10 April, 17 April, 24 April, 1 May, 8 May, 15 May, 22 May, 29 May, 5 June, 12 June, 19 June, 26 June, 3 July, 10 July, 17 July and 24 July.

Both Lloyds and Halifax have said that to understand the impact of the branch closure they contacted Dr Neil Hudson MP, The Post Office Area Manager, The National Federation of Sub Post Masters, 

Carlisle and Eden Citizen Advice Bureau and Cumbria Chamber of Commerce.

Customers of both banks will be able to make cash withdrawals upto £300 for personal customers and £700 for businesses customers per day along with paying bills, checking your balance, paying in cheques and depositing cash into accounts when using debit card and pin to make deposits will have monthly limits for business customers of upto £40,000 with a maximum of £4,995 per transaction and personal customers upto £2,995 with a £20,000 per year limit for personal customers.

Barclays Bank has also announced its Penrith Branch will close its doors for good on the 17th of April 2024 at 12noon.
