OyezOyezOyez Town Criers to make proclamation of new council on April fools day

Town criers will be ringing the changes this weekend as the biggest reorganisation of council structures in nearly 50 years takes effect across Cumbria.


This Saturday, Town Criers will proclaim the vesting of the new Westmorland and Furness Council at 1pm at Barrow Town Hall, Market Place in Kendal and the Bandstand on Cornmarket in Penrith town centre, before pinning up the formal ‘proclamation’ for all to see.


The 1st of April traditional represents April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day when of practical jokes and hoaxes are played on others. It’s not though however the town crier will be shouting "April Fools!" On Saturday over the new council’s arrival.


As Saturday the 1st of April 2023 will as mark the arrival of a new council replacing Cumbria County Council Eden Council South Lakeland Council and Barrow Council in the biggest reorganisation of council structures in nearly 50 years across Cumbria.


Penrith now has just 4 councillors representing the town across two wards of Penrith North and Penrith South elected last May to represent the town in the new Westmorland and Furness council.


Westmorland and Furness council have said in a statement “If you're in the area, be sure to drop by to witness this historic occasion.”
