Overnight Closures of M6 this Weekend as part of Lowther Bridge Repair Works

Drivers are being warned possible delays and disruption to journeys on the M6 this weekend due to overnight closures on the M6 between Shap and Penrith this weekend as major repair work continues on Lowther Bridge.

The bridge, which carries the M6 over the River Lowther just south of junction 40, is now over 50 years old and is undergoing extensive repairs to extend its lifespan. The work, led by National Highways, includes replacing expansion joints, waterproofing the bridge decks, improving drainage, resurfacing, and renewing road markings.

Since the two-year project began earlier this year, National Highways say good progress has been made, with sections of the bridge deck repaired, new waterproofing added, and scaffolding installed beneath the structure in preparation for the next stage.

To allow this work to continue safely, the M6 will be closed overnight on both carriageways this weekend:

Saturday 8 November: Northbound closed between junctions 39 and 40.

Sunday 9 November: Southbound closed between junctions 40 and 39.

The closures will be in place from 10pm to 6am, with clearly signed diversions via the A6 between Penrith and Shap. Speed reduction measures will be in operation along the A6 to help minimise disruption to nearby communities.

National Highways has warned that residents may notice some additional noise during the works.

A spokesperson said:

“We’d like to apologise in advance for any disturbance caused. The planned closures can change at short notice.”

The work forms part of ongoing investment in the M6 to maintain the safety and reliability of one of the region’s busiest routes.
