Northern Lights are set to be visible across parts of the UK tonight as solar storm that caused a coronal mass ejection from the sun earlier this week reaches earth and is forecast to create a potential G3 geomagnetic storm this evening producing the Northern Lights and seven planets align with most likely to be visible to naked eye.
The stunning displays could be seen “across the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland tonight”, according to the Met Office.
The weather forecaster says the Northern Lights “can produce a spectacular light show sometimes seen as far south as Scotland and Northern England/Ireland - if skies are clear.”
As well as the Northern Lights tonight will also see a rare planetary alignment of Not one, not two, but seven planets that are due to line up in the night skies in a relatively rare planetary parade.
The phenomenon will see Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Mercury align, with some of the planets visible to the naked eye.
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “'A band of rain and cloud will move into the northwest tonight, so the most prolonged clear skies will be further east in Scotland and northern England."
Around Penrith the skies currently have very little cloud giving some ideal viewing opportunities for the northern lights and the planetary alignment this evening after dark.
