New Nursery Plans in Penrith to be Given Go-Ahead

Plans submitted by Atkinson Building Contractors to build a day and pre-school nursery for 80 children in Penrith at the Eden Business Park will go before the Westmorland and Furness Council's planning committee next week with an officer recommendation to approval the plan, which would also create 20 jobs.

The intended provider for the new nursery is Lanwathby based Lambkins who operate a successful nursey and pre-school in Langwathby and are now seeking to expand and establish a second facility within Penrith.

Planning officer for the council have said nursery provision in Penrith was "at capacity" and Penrith Town Council planning committee members voted to support the application saying “Such facility is required in Penrith. But added they "would like to see conditions for sustainable design features such as rainwater harvesting, PV panels, EV charging points, swift boxes etc.”

The economic regeneration and development team at Westmorland and Furness council is supportive of the application and said “This is a much needed facility in Penrith due to the expansion of free working hours by government increasing demand and there are already waiting lists as existing facilities.”

It added: "The proposal will create new jobs and facilitate parents who wish to return to work by ensuring that additional childcare places are available in the town."

The proposed nursery will have a ratio of one member of staff to four children and is expected to create spaces for 80 children at the nursery that will operate between 8am and 6pm.
