New council day one requirements only 36.1% ready

The new Westmorland and Furness council is set to replace Eden council and Cumbria council along with South Lakeland council and Barrow Council on the 1st of April.

With responsibilities for everything from bin collection to social care highways education services across the Westmorland and Furness district.

However it has emerged the new council that in 81 days will be responsible for all services of the current councils it replaces is currently only 36.1% ready with only 19 of the 227 Day 1 Requirements fulfilled and ready for the 1st of April 2023.

Government established the new coho o to run for a year in shadow form to get all plans in place for Day one readiness to take over as the new local authority.

The Westmorland and Furness shadow cabinet will be told on Friday the 13th of January the council is currently only 36.1% ready for taking over as the new local authority.

It will also be told the new council is unlikely be have set it’s first year budget and council tax before the 10th of March.
