New community space opens in Penrith

The new High Sheriff of Cumbria, Dr Geoff Jolliff, opened the My Community new community space on Duke Street on Tuesday, which aims to support people with learning disabilities, neurodivergence, and the wider community.

My Community-Penrith is a community project focused on creating a better place for people with and without a learning disability to live in Penrith. The area is one of only nine chosen by Mencap to work with the community to create a better place for people with learning disabilities and their families live a fulfilling life.

The new community space is designed to be flexible, offering a venue for community group meetings, peer support, and even a space to create podcasts, and will also provide a marketplace for individuals to sell their work.

My Community Penrith has been, engaging with locals to understand their needs to help improve life for people with disabilities.

A spokesperson for My Community Penrith said “The space is going to be multi use, from Sit & Knit, to podcast creation.  We would love to see new community groups utilising the space, either as a physical space to meet or simply as somewhere to leave information which can be shared with others.”

More information about the project and events can be found on the mycommunitypenrith website.
