New Bench Installed in recognition of long-standing contributions by the now-disbanded Scaws Tenants & Residents Association

Penrith Town Council has completed the installation of a new bench on Brentfield Way, in recognition of the long-standing contributions of the now-disbanded Scaws Tenants & Residents Association that had served the local community for over 30years

The new bench was made possible through the Scaws Tenants & Residents Association awarding their remaining balance of £650 to Penrith Town Council for the installation of a bench in the central Scaws area, at a location agreed upon with and acceptable to local landowners. The town council’s Finance Committee supported the proposal and agreed to cover the remaining cost of the new bench.

The Scaws Tenants & Residents Association was originally established in 1994, at a time when it served as the primary link between residents, various councils, and the Eden Housing Association. However, in November 2024, the association made the decision to formally disband, in their view recognising that in the modern age of near-instant communication, the need for monthly meetings had significantly declined.

As part of their closure, members agreed to use their remaining funds for a commemorative bench, offering a lasting contribution to the local community.

Councillor Charlie Shepherd, Chair of the Council’s Finance Committee, and former Secretary of the former Scaws Tenants & Residents Association, said:

“This project is a great example of community collaboration delivering meaningful, lasting improvements.

“Thanks to the generous contribution from the Scaws Tenants & Residents Association, we've been able to create a welcoming resting spot on Brentfield Way - perfect for people passing through the estate and taking a break.

“It's a thoughtful addition that will serve the community for years to come.”

Bill Hardisty, former long-term Treasurer of the former Scaws Tenants & Residents Association, added:

"Although the association has now come to an end, it's nice to leave behind something small that will continue to benefit the community. This bench is a simple, lasting gesture of appreciation for the place we call home."

The town council said “Thanks are due to all those who gave so much time and effort over the years in service of the TRA.” “Special remembrance is also given to Jimmy McAdam, the last long-term Chair of the TRA, who passed away very recently.”
