National Highways Provide Update to Councillors on A66 and M6 projects

National Highways gave a presentation to members of Westmorland and Furness councils Eden Locality Board on Wednesday evening during a meeting at Penrith Town Hall on two major National Highways projects in Eden. The M6 Lune Gorge Structure Renewal Scheme that will see work on a number of bridges around Tebay and an update on the A66 upgrade and plans to progress work subject to outcomes of Legal challenges.

The update included news of adjustments to the A66 plans including news that Kemplay Roundabout that will become and underpass carrying the A66 under the A6 will not have traffic lights beyond some on slip roads allowing traffic to flow more freely around the roundabout without the current array of traffic lights impeding traffic flow.

Plans on community engagement and social value funding were also outlined to the councillors who asked questions around the work to address the housing needs for the workforce and how it will fit with the local community capacity.

National Highways spokesperson informed councillors that and accommodation strategy is being developed and that they were using knowledge gained in the constriction of Sellafield and the accommodation plans used to model a plan for the A66 accommodation strategy.

National Highways also outlined how its building positive relationships with local organisations and charities to continue to leave a lasting legacy for both the A66 and the M6 Lune Gorge projects.

The lasting legacy includes pots of funding to support local community projects. Cllr Dew questioned the local projects ethos given that funding and support from the Lund Gorge had been given to a school in Workington and funding from the A66 had gone to Carlisle Youth Zone. National Highways responded that they had no knowledge or contacts with local schools and organisations near the project sites and this two had applied for funding from the pots of money.
