The 50 year old Lowther Bridge situated, just south of junction 40, carries the M6 and thousands of vehicles daily over the River Lowther and is undergoing substantial repairs as part of a £9million project to ensure the longevity of the structure for many years to come.
The work by National Highways involves replacing the bridge’s expansion joints, waterproofing the bridge decks and improving drainage.
As part of the refurbishment project, National Highways expect to finish installing permanent expansion joints at M6 Lowther Bridge by the end of August.
To work safely during the installation of the new expansion joints, National Highways will put in place full overnight closures of the M6 in both directions between junctions 39 and 40
The full M6 overnight closures will be in place between 10pm -6am on:
• Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August
• Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August
• Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August
Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place via the A6 and A66 between junction 40 at Penrith and junction 39 at Shap.
