National Highways Announce Week of Full A66 Closures in May with Diversions via Local Roads

National Highways are installing average speed cameras on the A66 between M6 junction 40 and Temple Sowerby with a week of full overnight closures of the M6 planned.

This installation of the speed cameras was scheduled to take place later in the year but is being brought forward in response to concerns the 40mph speed limit isn't being adhered to by everyone.

To install the cameras safely, National Highways will be closing the A66 in both directions between Kemplay roundabout and Temple Sowerby from 12midnight to 5am from 5-9 May 2026.

In addition, they will close one lane of the westbound A66 from Kemplay roundabout to M6 junction 40 on Friday 8 May between 8pm and 5am.

Emergency access will be retained throughout the closure but for all other traffic there will be a fully signed diversion in place.

The local traffic diversion route will see Westbound traffic diverted off the A66 via Cliburn and Clifton Dykes onto the A6 between Clifton and Eamont Bridge to head North along the A6 to rejoin the A66 at Kemplay roundabout.

Local Eastbound A66 traffic will be diverted from Kemplay Roundabout via Carleton Avenue to Langwathby, Cliburn and back onto the A66.

Light vehicles will be diverted between the A66 and M6 via Kirkby Stephen and Tebay.

Due to existing HGV restrictions through Kirkby Stephen, heavy goods vehicles will be diverted via the M6, A69, and A1.

The diversion between M6 Junction 40 and the A1 at Scotch Corner is 185 km. Signage will be in place ahead of these points by National Highways to ensure drivers are informed of the closures in good time.
