M6 Work Leading to Sleepless Nights for Residents

Residents in villages South of Penrith along the M6 have experienced a month of overnight noise due to ongoing overnight resurfacing work taking place on a section of the M6 between Junction 40 and Clifton.

National Highways have been carrying out the resurfacing of the carriageway ahead of the Clifton railway bridge replacement work that has seen the M6 effectively reduced to a dual carriage way during the day and will see the M6 reduced to a single carriageway overnight as the railway work gets underway next month.

Residents have raised complaints and concerns over the loud overnight works with Clifton residents experiencing the loud noise but over the last few nights residents in Eamont Bridge, Brougham and Hackthorpe have also taken to social media and contacting local councillors about the loud noise.

Some residents said it’s preventing them from getting to sleep at night others have said it’s woken children through the night with the noise likened to an air raid siren constantly going off every night at 9pm through the night.

Clifton Community Council has said a request has been made for Westmorland and Furness Councils environment team to open a statutory nuisance case to address the noise with residents concerned they could face 18 months of noise with the motorway and railway works taking place at Clifton.

It’s been confirmed that the noise causing the disturbance to local residents has been caused by road sweepers used as part of the M6 resurfacing work by National Highway.

A spokesperson for National Highways told us in response to questions about the disturbance faced by residents overnight through April.

“We always endeavour to keep disruption down to a minimum; however, road sweepers are required because they clean the planed out surface prior to the new surface being laid.”

National Highways also confirmed that all surfacing works on the M6 between J40 and Clifton will be completed on Monday night (28 April) ahead of the work by Network Rail and the Lowther Bridge work already underway by National Highways.
