Votes have been verified and counted in the Eamont and Shap by election to elect a new councillor for the ward on Westmorland and Furness Council following the resignation in January of former councillors Neil Hughes.
Polls closed at 10pm and verification of the votes got underway at around 10:20pm.
Votes have been cast at seven polling stations across the ward with 3,449 voters eligible to vote in the by election.
A total of 1175 votes were cast a turnout of just 34.07% with 798 votes cast at polling stations and 377 postal votes.
Jonathan Davies – Putting Cumbria First 76 votes
Hector Meanwell – Conservative 241 votes
Pam Pottinger - Green Party 68 votes
Nicki Vecquery – Libdem 789
Libdem Candidate Nicki Vecquery was elected with 789 votes and will serve as ward councillor for Eamont and Shap until May 2027 when all Westmorland and Furness councillors will face elections along with changes to wards as part of the local government boundry commission review currently underway that is expected to see the Eamont and Shap ward scrapped and replaced with two new wards as part of the review.
The election of Nicki Vecquery for the Libdems means the ruling party retains its super majority control of the council with the same 37 seats.

“Finally, I’d like to thank all the staff at Westmorland and Furness Council for all the good work they’ve done during the election. Not only for the efficient count, tonight, but also for their work in the polling stations and throughout the campaign.”
