Landslip Suspected Cause of WestCoast Mainline Derailment at Shap

All 87 passengers onboard the Avanti WestCoast train that derailed at Shap this morning have been checked over by ambulance teams with just four suffering injury in the derailment that happened in a steep valley near Shap Wells hotel.

Heavy rain and wind resulted in flooring in the area and early indications are that a landslide could have impacted the line.

The front section of the train left the line and came to a stop between the the two sets of lines.

A major incident was declared with emergency services rushing to the scene after initial reports of the derailment.

After all passengers were safe removed from the train by emergency teams, the major incident was stood down to allow investigators from the RAIB  (Rail Accident investigation branch)  to now determine the cause and recovery work to get underway to allow Network Rail to reopen the WestCoast main line.

Network rail said “Following today’s derailment, all passengers and staff have been evacuated with no major injuries.”

“We are working with RAIB to establish the cause of the derailment.”

“The incident followed a suspected landslip in the area which has been experiencing significant adverse weather conditions and extremely heavy rainfall continues to compound the issue. Our dedicated teams are working to get trains back up and running as quickly as we can. We are working with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to establish the cause of the derailment.”

“Right now, we're unable to run trains between Preston and Carlisle. We're urging passengers to check with their train operator or National Rail Enquiries for the latest information.”

“This incident will cause disruption for the rest of the day but we are working to reopen the line as soon as it is safe to do so. We appreciate the patience of passengers while we work to resolve this issue.”
