As the clock ticks down to 8:30pm around the world millions will today be switching of lights for Earth Hour as the largest global environmental movement returns for its 19th edition with the Biggest Hour for Earth as it unites millions around the world in celebration of our planet.
Earth Hour is a global movement that reminds us that even small actions can make a big difference if everyone acts together.
Earth Hour will see landmarks around the world switch off from 8:30pm including Buckingham Palace and the London Eye. It’s not known if Councils locally will be switching off the lights at council buildings for Earth Hour but individuals, communities, and businesses are encouraged to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and has grown into a global movement that millions worldwide take collective action as the Earth Hour switch off.
As part of the event British Gas is giving its customers the chance to win free electricity for an entire year by switching off and saving energy this Earth Hour.
British Gas is rewarding 10 of its PeakSave customers who reduce their electricity usage during EarthHour between 8:30pm and 9:30pm tonight (Saturday, 22nd March) with free electricity for a year, based on the average yearly electricity cost projection.
John Evans, Commercial Director at British Gas, says: “Earth Hour is a powerful reminder that small actions can make a difference- not only to the environment but for 10 lucky PeakSavers who can win free electricity for a year. To be entered into a prize draw to win free electricity, our PeakSavers just need to use less electricity during Earth Hour than they usually would during this time.”
