Heatwave, Gritters and Thunderstorms for Cumbria as Yellow weather warning extended.

As Penrith and Cumbria baked in the heat today with temperatures in Penrith hitting 28 degrees this afternoon. 

Westmorland and Furness Council gritters have been out across the areas road network spreading sand in an effort to combat melting road surfaces as the heatwave continues.


This afternoon the Met office have updated the yellow weather warning for the area with the  forecast for thunderstorms through Sunday now forecasting the arrival of thunder across Cumbria this evening.


With the South of Scotland and the Welsh border already experiencing thunderstorms with 1264 lightning strikes detected in the last hour across these areas.


Thunderstorms that develop over England and Wales are forecast to clear northward and become confined to Cumbria and western Scotland over Saturday night, The storms will tend to become more elevated after dark as surface heating wanes, but still bringing a risk of localised flooding and lightning. 


Sunday is forecast to be more of the same with high temperatures and thunderstorms forecast to last through to Monday afternoon for the area.
