Great North Air Ambulance face mounting financial difficulties

The Great North Air Ambulance is facing mounting financial difficulties the charity revealed this week it was likely to run at a deficit due to rising costs this year. The essential expansions the Great North Air Ambulance to operating 24/7 have mean that the charity need to raise even more funds than before to keep its life-saving service running. The air ambulance was called on to attend 2,100 incidents in 2023.

A spokes person for the charity said “The frightening truth is that for 2024 we are predicting to run at a deficit. This means the charity entirely funded through donations will have to go into its limited reserves just to keep the charity flying this year.”

“We strongly believe every person in our service area should have access to our advanced pre-hospital care, no matter what the time of day is - that's why it's incredibly important to sustain our 24/7 service.”

The Great North Air Ambulance rely on donations to save lives with its fleet of three helicopters and crews that operate across the North. The charity is one of many that rely on donations to provide life saving services across Cumbria yet receive no government funding to support provision of the services, often making the difference between life and death for those they are called to help working alongside other emergency services.

The Air Ambulance is a regularly sight in the Air above Penrith flying to emergencies across Cumbria from its Langwathby base and was called to assist North West Ambulance services in Penrith on Thursday with a medical emergency at a Penrith supermarket.
